At NorthBay Medical Center, the pharmacy supports 140 beds, and NorthBay VacaValley Hospital has 50 beds with decentralized clinical pharmacy services. Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) and Electronic Health Record enable clinical Pharmacists to manage medications throughout the facility. Pharmacists are represented at all medical staff committees and most nurse or hospital committees to ensure integration of safe medication use.
The Pharmacy Practice Residency (PGY1) at NorthBay Healthcare is a one year post-graduate training program in a supportive environment which prepares clinical pharmacist to provide pharmaceutical care for hospitalized patients in a community based setting and to be adjunct faculty for a college of pharmacy. The pharmacist practice model integrates distribution and clinical activities at the patient care level and is supported by centralized drug distribution. The practice model is further supported by a complete electronic health record and computerized physician order entry. In addition to developing operational skills to be successful in a community hospital practice, residents are required to actively participate in training and educating intern pharmacists on site and at the university by leading small group discussions. Each resident will develop communication skills by presenting Continuing Education to nurses and pharmacists, and actively participating on interdisciplinary teams.
